Google Again
Feb. 8th, 2026 11:55 pmI spent hours perfecting a resume and cover letter today, then was disappointed when I found that I could not submit the online application. I wasted hours spinning my wheels, troubleshooting my browser and trying to come up with workarounds. At first, I thought the problem was the web page trying to load google maps, which is utterly unnecessary for a job application form. Now, I think but I'm not sure that it's Google Recaptcha that's preventing me from submitting the page, and I'm tired of submitting to google's garbage, so I don't want to unblock it.
I felt depressed and hopeless about this endless encroachment of privacy- and security-compromising technology. Almost every job requires an online application, more and more of the websites won't even load, and I'm more and more helpless to get a job without submitting.
I tried to get help from AI with my resume, but it was mostly useless. I took it's advice to incorporate into my resume key words from the job description, but then it started suggesting that I mention skills and experience that I don't have, and, when I told it to stop, it started suggesting that I repeat verbatim in a professional summary irrelevant skills mentioned in the work experience section. I kinda gave up at that point. When I was done writing, I asked it to copyedit. It simply re-printed the contents of my resume.
